What is a fat bike?
A fat bike is a bicycle with very wide tyres, usually 4 inches (about 10 cm) or more. Big tyres at low pressure grip sand, mud, gravel and dirt roads, and make city potholes disappear. In Vietnam they are also known as "xe đạp bánh béo", literally "fat-wheel bike".
Electric or regular
An electric fat bike has a motor and battery: longer rides, easy hills, no sweat on the commute. A regular fat bike is lighter, cheaper and never needs charging.
Any terrain
Beaches, village lanes, the rocky tracks around Ninh Binh or the busy streets of Hanoi and Saigon: one bike for all of it.

A craze abroad, now arriving in Vietnam
Fat bikes were built for snow and sand. In the last few years, the electric version especially, they have become a phenomenon in Europe and North America: in city streets, outside schools, on beaches.
Born for snow and sand
Fat bikes started in Alaska and the deserts of the American Southwest, where riders needed very wide tyres to stay on top of soft ground. From there they spread around the world.
The Netherlands: 111,556 in one year
In 2024 fat bikes appeared in the Dutch bicycle industry's statistics for the first time: 111,556 sold, about 13% of all new bikes (source: RAI Vereniging and BOVAG). They are so common that the Dutch government is preparing separate rules for electric fat bikes.
