A fat bike is a bicycle with very wide tyres, usually 4 inches (about 10 cm) or more, compared with around 2 inches on a normal mountain bike. The wide tyres run at low pressure, which gives grip on sand, mud, gravel and dirt and a very smooth ride. In Vietnam they are also called "xe đạp bánh béo" (fat-wheel bike).

An electric fat bike has a motor (typically 250 to 750 W) and a battery, so it goes further and climbs easily, but it is heavier, needs charging and costs more. A regular fat bike has no motor: lighter, simpler and cheaper. See the guide to fat bike types.

Fat bikes are sold by a number of bike shops in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and other cities, and on Shopee and Facebook, mostly in Vietnamese. As a guide: regular fat bikes about 5 to 20 million VND (roughly 200 to 800 USD), electric fat bikes about 10 to 40 million VND (roughly 400 to 1,600 USD), depending on brand, motor, battery and seller. Exact prices per model will be on fatbike.vn when bikes go live.

In Vietnam, an e-bike with a motor up to 250 W and a top speed of 25 km/h is generally treated as an electric bicycle and needs no licence. More powerful bikes may fall under electric motorbike rules. Ask the shop about the specific model.

Yes. There is no restriction on foreigners buying a bicycle or an electric bicycle. Fatbike.vn exists partly for this reason: all bike information, ordering and support is available in English, and the bike is delivered to your address in Vietnam.

No. Fatbike.vn is where fat bike shops in Vietnam list their bikes. You choose a bike, order and pay on fatbike.vn; the shop that sells that bike delivers it and handles the warranty. The shop's name is always shown on the bike's page.

Not yet. Until the first models go live, the fat bike images on this site are AI-generated illustrations, labelled as such under each image. As soon as partner shops are on board, every model will have real photos of that actual bike.
